Military experience helps Ice Watch operations manager plan gritting services

The planning and logistics which go into gritting car parks, estate roads and cycle paths is akin to a military operation for Ice Watch. So much so that it recently appointed a former, long-serving army officer to oversee its activities in Southern England.

Mark Williams has just completed his frst six months as operations manager with the winter risk management specialist. And for him, managing the logistics of winter gritting is pretty straightforward compared with the complex and dangerous campaigns in which he was involved during his extensive, 23-year innings with HM Forces.

He now uses these operational planning skills in less dangerous, although frequently challenging, poor weather environments and is writing Ice Watch’s Standard Operational Procedures and Operational Change documents as well as planning when and where to grit in liaison with Ice Watch’s in-house meteorologist Timo Strom and overseeing a team of gritting contractors.
