Name: Will Charnley
Job title: Operations Assistant
Month and year started at Ice Watch/idverde: January 2025
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your background?
I previously worked in an operational role at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London before moving to Suffolk to join Ice Watch. I grew up in southwest London/Surrey area and grew up working in fine dining which gave me a passion for food, wine and cooking! Along with that I enjoy gardening and growing veg to use in cooking, especially chillies which I make my own hot sauces with. When not forecasting and gritting snow at Ice Watch, I love being in it snowboarding with friends.
What is a typical day like for you in your role at Ice Watch?
A typical day at Ice Watch involves analysing the morning forecasts and determining what areas are at risk of ice and snow and then working with our operatives to ensure these areas are gritted for our clients to avoid any accidents from occurring on their sites.
What are some of the Ice Watch projects or achievements that you’re most proud of, and why?
Providing our services through an exceptionally busy January and February this year, making sure gritting and snow clearing was carried out across the country. Also the planting of lots of flowers and installing a bird house outside our office to help out the environment!
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in your field or pursuing a similar passion?
Be a sponge! Take in as much information as possible from your peers who have been in the industry for a significant time and ask lots of questions. Follow lots of forums/your tube channels focused on meteorology to expand your knowledge and further increase your passion for it!
