Name: Gareth Fitchett
Job title: Icewatch Operations Manager
Month and year started at Ice Watch/idverde: October 2024
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your background?
I spent over 20 years working for the world’s leading express logistics carrier. I was lucky enough to have several roles in this time in the UK and across Europe in the HR and Operational Management functions. Prior to joining idverde, I was Head of Operational Support for The Wildlife Trust, where I could apply my experience and skills to a cause I’m very passionate about. I live in Derbyshire with my wife and two children. In my free time I’ll either be at gig rocking out or watching the mighty Rams at Pride Park.
What is a typical day like for you in your role at Ice Watch?
It’s definitely a cliché – But no two days are the same at Ice Watch. It’s all depending on the weather. On a cold night, it’s all about the forecasting analysis, route planning and mobilisation of our teams across the country. When we’re having milder spells, it’s all about the holistic management of our contractors and suppliers, ensuring that we’re ready to go for the next cold snap.
What are some of the Ice Watch projects or achievements that you’re most proud of, and why?
I lead the operational teams in the North of the country – Typically where we’re always going to see more hazardous weather conditions. Getting out and visiting some of our largest customers particularly NHS sites is always rewarding to see first hand the impact we’re having on keeping vital sites for communities safe and operating. Looking ahead, it’s really exciting to start looking at how I can develop our teams with digital transformation and sustainability projects – Watch this space!
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in your field or pursuing a similar passion?
Any role within an operational setting is hugely rewarding – You’re the ones delivering the service. From early on in my career I was offered some advice which I’ve always tried to follow.
Stay Curious: Always ask questions and seek to learn more. Curiosity is the driving force behind innovation and growth.
Network: Build relationships with others in your field. Networking can open doors to new opportunities and provide valuable insights.
Seek Mentorship: Find someone who can guide you and provide advice based on their experience. A good mentor can be invaluable.
